Terms & Conditions

Last updated: 28 June 2026

These terms govern your use of the Kept journal, operated by Kept (“Kept”, “we”, “us”). By creating an account or using Kept, you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.

1. What Kept is

Kept is a private, end-to-end encrypted digital journal for tracking habits, sleep, moods, and personal writing. It is provided free of charge, on an “as is” and “as available” basis.

2. Your account

You are responsible for keeping your password (and, for Google sign-in, your encryption passphrase) and your one-time recovery key confidential. You are responsible for activity under your account.

3. Encryption & recovery — please read

Your entries are encrypted on your device with a key derived from a secret only you hold. This means we cannot read your data, and we cannot recover it for you. If you lose both your password/passphrase and your recovery key, your entries are permanently unrecoverable. This is a deliberate consequence of true zero-knowledge privacy, not a defect. Please save your recovery key somewhere safe.

4. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • use Kept for any unlawful purpose or in violation of any applicable law;
  • attempt to disrupt, attack, reverse-engineer, or gain unauthorised access to the service or other users’ data;
  • misuse the service in a way that harms Kept or its users.

5. Your content

You own everything you write in Kept. Because your content is encrypted, we claim no rights over it and cannot access it. You are solely responsible for your own entries.

6. Availability & changes

We may modify, suspend, or discontinue features at any time. We aim to keep the service running but do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free availability. We recommend exporting your data periodically (Settings → Download my journal) as your own backup.

7. No warranty

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Kept is provided without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose and uninterrupted availability.

8. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Kept shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential loss, or for any loss of data arising from your loss of your password and recovery key, your use of the service, or any service interruption.

9. Termination

You may stop using Kept and delete your data at any time from within the app. We may suspend or terminate accounts that breach these terms or the law.

10. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of India, and any disputes are subject to the jurisdiction of the courts of India.
